ACTION E.2: Actions monitoring

SUB-ACTION E.2/A: Actions monitoring in the Gran Sasso National Park

The action involves the verification of the results obtained through:

the monitoring of the effectiveness of the presence and activities of the Anti-poison Dog Unit (Action C.2), assessed on the number of:

  • trained dogs and staff units working in the Park;
  • other dog units trained for other Italian regions/protected areas;
  • missions/interventions in the Park;
  • mouthfuls/poisoned corpses identified.

the monitoring of the effectiveness of dissemination and sensitization activities (Action D.1, Action D.2) through the creation of sample interviews and questionnaires, which will involve:

  • local stakeholders, in particular schools, farmers and tour operators;
  • stakeholders at the national level (institutions and other parties, etc.) involved in the Strategy against the use of poison and the NCA activity.

SUB-ACTION E.2/B: Actions monitoring in Aragon

The action involves the verification of the results obtained through the monitoring of the presence and activities of the Anti-poison Dog Units (Action C.2), assessed on:

  • the number of missions/interventions carried out;
  • the number of cases of mouthfuls/poisoned corpses identified.

In addition, the effectiveness of dissemination and sensitization activities (Action D.1 and Action D.2), will be evaluated on the basis of the number of meetings held with interested parties.

In order to verify the presence of poisoned baits at the beginning of the project, sample areas will be established in the Gran Sasso National Park and in Aragon, among those that are considered particularly at risk on the basis of findings of previous mouthfuls or poisoned corpses or other factors. In these areas, the supervisory staff will carry out transect controls on a monthly basis. The same transects will then be covered by Anti-poison Dog Units of the project.

This activity will allow to implement an effective comparison of the NCA’s activity results.

Both for sub-action E.2/A and sub-Action E.2/B, given that it is expected that the activity of the NCA leads to identify 70% of poisoned baits over the area, the indicators that can verify the effectiveness of the anti-poison strategy in the territories of partners 1 and 3 are:

a) the ratio between the number of mouthfuls and poisoned corpses found annually (before using the NCA), and the number of mouthfuls/poisoned corpses found annually after the begninning of the NCA activity. This indicator will allow to verify the effectiveness of the NCA in the poison detection’s activity;

b) the ratio between the number of mouthfuls and poisoned corpses found in the first year of activity of the NCA, and the number of mouthfuls/poisoned corpses found in the last year of activity the NCA, within LIFE Project (the activity will continue indefinitely).

This indicator allows to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy against the use of poison.
