Necropsy of a poisoned griffon at the Centro Recupero La Alfranca (Zargoza, Aragon).
Necropsy of a poisoned griffon at the Centro Recupero La Alfranca (Zargoza, Aragon).

The action involves the construction of an effective diagnostic activity of the cases of poisoning, which will complement the activities of the NCA.

Veterinary specialists will take care of the stages of sample collection and/or necropsy of carnivores killed by a suspected ingestion of poison. The collected samples will then be under toxicological investigations in specialized institutes, in order to find out the type of poison used.

The vet of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park will take a training course in Aragon in order to learn:

  • the techniques and materials used for the collection and storage of samples in cases of poisoning;
  • how to perform the necropsy examinations;
  • the rules for the carrying out of targeted clinical analysis.

The training course will take place at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of La Alfranca (Zaragoza), where a veterinarian specialized in cases of poisoning of birds of prey operates.
